Stock Your Library

Ah, finally we get to something near–and–dear to most tech writers: an excuse to shop for books! Perhaps you already have an extensive personal library. But if you’re relatively new in the field, or have always worked for companies that provided books (but kept them when you left), you’ll need to go book buying.

Keep in mind that your book budget will be greatly influenced by whether you want pristine books whose spines have never been cracked, or you like the character of a much loved and highlighted book. New books are available from university bookstores, brick–and–mortar stores, and of course online. And now buying used books has never been easier. Even the mega online sellers have links to Buy It Used.

You should plan to purchase the most current style guides, technology books, and legal references (especially for tax advice). Then plan to keep your style guides up–to–date.
