Computer Hardware
No matter what your technical area of interest is, you’ll have to have a computer. Friends and former co–workers can offer valuable advice, but keep in mind that everyone’s requirements are different. There are so many choices that it's easy to get overwhelmed and just stay with your old, slow computer. After all, it’s already set up, you know its quirks, and are getting along fine. However, it’s better to spend the time on setting up a new system now, before you have client deadlines, than to face the task of transferring in–progress work with the calendar staring you in the face.
Resist the temptation to buy used or to save a $100 here and a $100 there on your computer hardware. Remember, it only takes a few hours of billable time to recoup that investment, and you’ll be so much more productive that you’ll wonder how you ever got work done with your old computer.
So where to get the goods? If you are lucky enough to have found a knowledgeable clerk at a big box computer store, keep going back to him/her. If not, consider the larger online computer sellers. Even if your business consists of only you, you can get set up with a corporate account and account manager, who can make your purchasing experience much easier!
