But Wait, There’s More
If you've used this chapter’s checklists, you’re pretty well set up to be able to do client work. But there are a few more items to take care of and a few people to add to your Rolodex.
- If you’re setting up a website, you’ll need to register your domain name and set up an account with a hosting service.
- You should develop backup procedures, whether they’re simple (copy to an external hard drive) or more complex (real–time online backups).
- Insure your computer, your office, and its supplies. You’ve just spent a lot of money, and it’s imperative that all the goods be properly insured.
- Change your professional memberships and magazine subscriptions. Now that you’re running a business, your professional memberships and magazine subscriptions should be transferred to be in your business’ name. This makes it easy to properly take advantage of tax deductions.
- Add professional advisors to your contact list. Unless you really enjoy the business aspect of having your own business, and don’t mind spending the overhead time, it’s good to add the following professional advisors to your contact list: accountant, financial planner, insurance agent, lawyer.
