International Technical
Communication Month
By Tom Barnett
When it comes to technical communication, STC is the
organization. The Society board of directors is working on so
many initiatives right now that it could not formally sponsor
this celebration, but maybe next year.
The recognition of technical communication is not something
new. The Twin Cities Chapter obtained a governor's
proclamation of technical communication week at least 20 years
ago, the Phoenix Chapter has celebrated a similar event for
about that long, and chapters in about a dozen states have
similar recognition.
The second annual celebration of International
Technical Communication Month has been moved to the month of
May for 2006 to coincide with the STC Annual Conference.
International Technical
Communication Month is a special time of year in which STC
members and others can not only celebrate the value of
technical communications, but also raise the awareness of our
profession, our professionalism, and the ethics and creativity
we bring to our work.
Plan to do something in your company to celebrate our field and the good you do in the world.
A set
of tips on how to celebrate the event is also available.
The
proclamation reads as follows:
Proclamation
WHEREAS, recognition is
given
to the importance of having
a bridge between those
who create technology and
those who use it; and
WHEREAS, recognition is
given to
the creative work of
information designers and
technical communicators who
build those bridges of
understanding and usability; and
WHEREAS, recognition is
given to
the standards of
professional excellence and
ethical behavior
exhibited by these individuals;
NOW, THEREFORE,
we do hereby proclaim
May 2006 as
International
Technical Communication
Month
