About the STC Management SIG

What We Do

STC's Special Interest Group (SIG) on Management supports our members in managing technical communication groups, and in developing the skills needed to be an effective manager. Specifically, we focus on three broad categories of issues:

  • Project management (scheduling and budgeting, information planning, teams, adhering to a plan, evaluating effectiveness)
  • People management (career ladders, job descriptions, hiring, performance planning, coaching, and appraising)
  • Business management (Determining the services and products to offer (internally and externally), establishing strategies for pricing or funding, marketing of technical communication services)

We offer our Bylaws for your reading enjoyment.

How We Support Our Members

We help members develop their expertise in the business of technical communication in these ways:

  • Meetings. We hold some online. Others are face-to-face, and occur in conjunction with the STC Annual Conference.
  • Quarterly newsletter. We mail the newsletter to members; after the mailing, we also make the newsletter available online.
  • Discussion list, in which members can pose questions about vexing questions to one another and learn from the experience of other members.
  • This website, which contains links, articles, worksheets and other materials provided by our members to assist their colleagues.

Who Are We?

Managers of technical communication and similar groups, business owners, project managers, senior technical communicators, and people aspiring to these positions.

How to Become a Member

When you join STC or renew your membership, indicate that you want to join the Management SIG. (Note that there is a separate fee to join the SIG.)

At all other times of the year, contact the STC Office (www.stc.org), and submit a request to join the SIG along with your payment.

Leadership Transition

The SIG Manager, the Assistant SIG Manager, and the SIG Treasurer are elected to two-year terms. When the time comes to transition from to a new SIG manager, the outgoing Manager will remain to support the incoming Manager for at least three months to ensure a smooth transition.

Monthly Leadership Council Meetings

The Assistant SIG Manager organizes and leads SIG Leadership Council meetings (teleconference); he or she develops the agenda with support and suggestions from the Manager. These meetings are held at least once per quarter and are open to any SIG member to attend. Anyone interested in attending can contact the Manager or Assistant Manager to get a meeting schedule and instructions for attending the teleconference.
