How to approve or reject a new list subscriber

Individuals may visit the list website, click the button to Join, and complete the form to subscribe to the list. When this happens, the list server sends an approval message to the list administrator. The message looks like this:

List:  LISTNAME
Name:  First M. Last
Email: name@somewhere.com

A request from 'name@somewhere.com' to join the private
list 'LISTNAME' has been received.

Their subscription request will not be activated until an
administrator approves it.

To approve this member, send the following two line message to
lyris@lists.stc.org

   login (enter your password here)
   member approve nnnnnn
---
To reject (delete) this member, send the following two line message to
lyris@lists.stc.org

   login (enter your password here)
   member reject nnnnnn
---

  1. Open a new email message and put lyris@lists.stc.org in the To field.
  2. Delete your signature and any other characters.
  3. In the blank message, paste either the two lines to accept or or the two lines to reject the new subscriber. Type your password over (enter your password here).
  4. Send the message.

The list server replies to the administrator with a message like the following.

>    member reject nnnnnn
The following actions were taken:
* Member ID 292536 (name@somewhere.com) was rejected (deleted).

OR

Re: your command request
>    member approve nnnnnn
The following actions were taken:
* Member ID 292535 (name@somewhere.com) was approved.

The list server sends a message to the subscriber like the following.

Re: your subscribe request
> subscribe LISTNAME

We have received your request to subscribe to the private mailing
list 'LISTNAME'.  Your request has been forwarded to the mailing list
administrator.

Because this mailing list is private, you must be approved by a
mailing list administrator before you can become a member of this
mailing list.

After you have approved or rejected the subscriber, the list server sends a message like the following.

---

Your request to join 'LISTNAME' has been approved.

You are now a member of 'LISTNAME'.

OR

---

Your request to join 'LISTNAME' has been rejected.

can send email to owner-listname@lists.stc.org
