Hack Attacks trilogy,
by John Chirillo

John Wiley & Sons, 2001

Nitty-gritty detail, including source code, explaining the tools and techniques used by hackers and security experts.

John Chirillo's encyclopedic Hack Attacks trilogy consists of these books:

  • Hack Attacks Revealed: A Complete Reference with Custom Security Hacking Toolkit

  • Hack Attacks Denied: Complete Guide to Network Lockdown

  • Hack Attacks Encyclopedia: A Complete History of Hacks, Cracks, Phreaks, and Spies over Time

Not being a programmer, I can't run and evaluate the many source code files and examples provided. Since the source code includes some of the most destructive viruses ever to wreck a hard drive, it was the better part of wisdom not to try!

In a total of 2300 pages and two CDs with thousands of lines of code, these three books provide thorough technical detail about network vulnerabilities and how to protect them. If you want to see for yourself the tools and actual code used by hackers, you can find it here. And, if you want to learn how to protect your network systems, these books will more than get you started.
