Letter from the EditorIt's spring, and everything is new again. KAREN MOBLEY |

A New URL |
Yes, it's spring! Everything is fresh and new, including our Web site address! If you made it here you must realize that ;-). On April 1st, the STC moved all the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) onto a new server. The confusion that followed was, well, heart-warming. It was great to hear from so many people who had bookmarked a particular article or issue and wanted to know where it had gone!!! Incidentally, the Hyperviews Web site structure remained the same. If you have a bookmark you want to update, change "www.stc.org/pics/online" to "www.stcsig.org/oi" and the bookmark should work again. |
A New Look |
The Hyperviews:Online Web site has been updated. The look and feel hasn't changed drastically, but the changes were recommendations from a usability study that I conducted as part of my Masters project. The Hyperviews:Online Web site hasn't had any changes since the fall issue that appeared in November 1998. That's a long time in the life of a Web site! The New Look also includes changing the Web site over to Cascading Style Sheets. Like it or not (and I'm still not sure which camp I fall into), CSS is an STC recommendation for all STC newsletter Web sites. I've decided to consider it a learning experience. I view the Web pages on as many browsers as possible and learn to laugh. The Hyperviews:Online staff hasn't completed the entire update, but we hope to do so by the summer issue. |
New Staff Members |
Speaking of our staff, we have a lot of new staff members! This is in part because of our new features on the Web site. The Archives page has been revamped and now you can scan abstracts of all our articles. We welcome David Owens to the Archives editor position. We've added an Online Information Glossary. It's small now, but we expect it to grow and change as our profession continues to expand. The glossary is part of our outreach to students and those new to the Online Information profession. We welcome Phil Norcross as Glossary Editor and Val Henken as the Assistant Glossary Editor. If you have a term, definition, source citation, or additional information about a glossary term, send it to Phil. We also want to welcome Brian Curtis as our Events and Conferences Editor. Brian will help us make the Events and Conferences page more timely and hopefully more useful to OI-SIG members. If you have an event of interest, send it to Brian. |
A New Column |
Neil Perlin has created another great column for Hyperviews:Online. Practical Magic focuses on solving problems that might not be bleeding edge, but can still make you look like a wizard! |
New Conference |
And now it's time for the STC Conference. SIG Manager Scott DeLoach, Assistant Editor Christy Capps, and myself will be at the conference in Chicago. We look forward to seeing you! If you have any ideas, comments, or suggestions for Hyperviews:Online, we'll be delighted to hear them. When we return from the conference, we will complete the spring issue of Hyperviews:Online in a post-conference edition. Be sure to check back with us at the end of May for the updated edition! |
