About the Community

The Usability and User Experience Community is a community of practice within STC, the Society for Technical Communication. Until the STC Transformation in 2004, it as known as the STC Usability SIG. With over 1800 members from around the world, it is a forum for promoting the practice of usability. Members range from those just starting to incorporate usability techniques into their work to those for whom it is the primary focus of its work.

The Usability SIG focuses on issues related to the usability and usability assessment of technical communication, providing a forum in which STC members can share information and experience.

The community mission encompasses networking and communication. But what does that really mean? Here is one comment from a long-time member about how the SIG touched his life:

"The STC Usability SIG and its tremendously helpful and professional members have played a large role in providing me with usability skills and information. I have therefore been able to raise awareness of the importance of usability within the IT organization for which I am a tech writer, and has helped to increase my visibility as a person who can contribute value to a project from a usability perspective." --Dick Miller

The membership profiles highlight new members with their backgrounds and reasons for joining the SIG. What's your reason?

You can contact anyone on the Community Leadership Team to discuss any ideas or concerns, join the email discussion list, get involved through one of the many volunteer participation opportunities, or even help start a local chapter.
