Michael Harvey
Statistical Writer
SAS Institute

After getting a Master of Arts in Experimental Psychology from Duke University, Michael Harvey started his technical communication career as a contract writer for AT&T, working on UNIX documentation. As a contractor, he also wrote training material for IBM and reference material for Bankers Trust of New York. Michael wrote user guides, programmer manuals, and administrator guides for Data General networking products. For over 15 years, Michael managed documentation teams for Data General and EMC. In addition, he taught technical writing at Durham Technical Community College for three years.

Michael has been a member of STC since 1988, belonging to the Carolina chapter the entire time. He has been a member of the STC Usability and User Experience (UUX) SIG community for a number of years. He served as Treasurer of the UUX SIG in 2009.

In 1994, 1997, and 1999, he designed, implemented, and analyzed three local salary surveys for the Carolina chapter. He served the Carolina chapter as Treasurer (two years), President (two non-consecutive terms), Immediate Past President (two years), Managing Editor of the chapter newsletter (two years) and Acting Treasurer (one year). He received the Distinguished Chapter Service Award in 2004 and became an STC Associate Fellow in 2006.

Michael is a member of the Triangle Usability Professionals Association (TriUPA): www.triupa.org. He attended Bentley College's Usability Boot Camp in 2005.
