YOUR VOTES
Top Three Titles?Even though there were only 15 votes, we have 3 titles that received the bulk of the votes and fit a range of interests. In order of your preferences, they are:
”Rocket Surgery Made Easy: The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Finding and Fixing Usability Problems” by Steven Krug, 2010.
"Selling Usability" by John Rhodes, 2009.
”Letting Go of the Words: Writing Web Content that Works” by Ginny (Janice) Redish, 2007.
Would You Like to Save Money and Help the SIG?The book links are to Amazon. They include a code for the UUX SIG—use them to purchase books and the SIG receives a few cents at
no cost to you.
How Were the Votes Analyzed?I analyzed the votes informally by looking at the total number of votes for first–third choices in relation to the relative number of votes given for first, second, and third choice. This strategy was designed to select the titles with the widest appeal and greatest number of sign-ups.
For example, "Selling Usability" received the most votes for first choice, but overall it only had 7 first–third choice votes, while "Rocket Surgery Made Easy" had 13.
"Letting Go of the Words" also had 7 first–third choice votes, but most of them were as the third choice.
WHEN IS THE NEXT MEETING?Our first discussion of 2010 will be in February. It will be a late afternoon meeting (4 pm PST/PDT, 6 pm CST/CDT, and 7 pm EST/EDT). I'll send out a sign-up notice in mid-Jan.
WHO WILL MODERATE?UUX member Alice Preston has agreed to moderate (she suggested "Rocket Surgery" and several of the other books we voted on). I let Alice select the month, because 7 of you chose Jan. and 8 chose Feb. It's encouraging that people want to have the discussions on a regular basis, but "Rocket Surgery" won't be released until mid- to late-Dec. A Feb. meeting will let everyone catch up with their daily lives and read the book.
RECORDING OF "MENTAL MODELS"A recording of the "Mental Models" discussion will be available soon. I'll send out a notice when it has been uploaded. Attendance was low but the discussion was lively! I'll summarize the comments and post them too.
MORE BOOK SUGGESTIONSWe have titles for the next two or three meetings, but we're always eager to hear about useful or exciting new books in the field. You can suggest up to three titles with the
Suggestion Form. When we have enough new titles, I'll post a summary for people to check out.
