Usability Interface

Time to Call it Quits

By David Dick, UUX Assistant Manager

When Sherri Martin and I began (in June) to plan this issue, we had a problem-nothing to publish. Then I came up with the idea of interviewing people, and we had three people in mind:

  • Caroline Jarrett, who has finished writing Forms That Work: Designing Web Forms for Usability
  • Pawan Vora, who has just finished writing Web Application Design Patterns
  • Tom Johnson, who manages a web site called I'd Rather be Writing
Perhaps they would allow us to interview them? Surprise-they did. If we were to choose a theme for this issue, it would be "people making an important contribution to our profession". At last, we found the content that we wanted to publish! I'll leave it up to Sherri to publish a review of Forms That Work and Web Application Design Patterns.

For the majority of my time as Editor, ten years now, the articles published in Usability Interface are from our readers, and sometimes articles are republished from Chapter newsletters. There are occasions, however, when we make cold calls to people we know and ask for a contribution to the newsletter. Sometimes, the contributions are from people who are not even members of the STC, but we feel that their work would be of interest to you.

The newsletter has won its fair share of awards, and I have some awards as well. The greatest reward has been the opportunity to meet new friends and acquaintances; some of whom have make a significant impression on me, both professionally and personally. If my membership to STC has given me any return on my investment, then it is these people; some of whom I will see again and others to whom I have said a fond farewell. I am a far better person thanks to them.

I have had a wonderful experience serving as Editor of Usability Interface, but now it's time to relinquish my job to somebody else. Sherri Martin has graciously accepted my resignation and willingly agreed to take over.

Please support Sherri in carrying on the tradition of publishing a world-class newsletter as you have supported me.
